Tom Izzo went to college at Northern Michigan University, where he played guard on the basketball team for all four years. Following his graduation, Izzo became the head coach at a high school for a season before taking his first college job as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He later took an assistant coach position at Michigan State University in 1983 and remained in that position until 1995 when he became head coach.
Due to Izzo’s great success in the NCAA Tournament in the past, he has been nicknamed by some as “Mr. March”. Starting in 1998, Michigan State started a streak that now spans over 20 straight seasons in making it to the NCAA tournament. Back in 1999, Izzo won the Big Ten Tournament for the first time and he has since won it four more times. Later that season the Spartans made it to the Final Four for the first time under Izzo and they would continue to do so the next two years. Overall, Izzo has made the Final Four seven times, won the Big Ten Tournament Five Times, and won the NCAA Tournament once in 2000.
Tom Izzo has already been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and has won over 500 games as the head coach at Michigan State University, the most in school history.
