Shohei Ohtani is one of the most highly regarded MLB prospects of all-time. Before stepping onto the field in the MLB, the Japanese pitcher was already receiving comparisons to Babe Ruth because of his incredible ability to hit and pitch. Ohtani started his baseball career in Northern Japan and recorded the fastest pitch by a Japanese high school pitcher at 99 mph. His professional debut was at the age of 18 with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters where he played right field and pitched. During the 2014 Mazda All-Star Game, Ohtani broke the record for the fastest pitch by a Japanese pitcher with his 101-mph fastball. Shohei would continue his brilliance in Japan for a few more seasons before making the decision to leave for the MLB.
In late 2017, Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels agreed to a contract that would bring the Japanese phenom to the MLB. Their new lefty ace did not disappoint after signing, in his first seven starts the Angels won 6 of the games and Ohtani outhit every player on the team except superstar Mike Trout. In Ohtani’s. first MLB home run was an absolute bomb against Josh Tomlin, and the following day he homered again to become the first Angels player to homer in his first two career home games. He tied the franchise record of 12 total bases, and five RBI through his first three consecutive career games. On April 6, he hit his third home run in three days, becoming the first Angels rookie to do so. In only his second start on the mound on April 8, Ohtani took a perfect game through 61⁄3 innings before allowing a hit. With an average fastball velocity of 97 mph, Ohtani can shutdown batters with ease, but his best pitch might just be his splitter. Ohtani’s splitter, saving more runs per 100 pitches than almost any other in history. But Shohei Ohtani’s excellence doesn’t end there as he’s also one of the fastest players in the MLB. On many of his extra base hits, Ohtani has been recorded at some of the fastest times to round the bases and adds to his unreal box of tools on the diamond. While some scouts may have been wary at first about how his game would translate to the MLB, Ohtani has smashed expectation so far and continued his excellent level of play in his blossoming career. With such an amazing track record at such a young age its frightening to think that Ohtani may just be getting started in the MLB. If he can improve his already amazing skills over the next few seasons, no opponent stands a chance against the Japanese star.
