Sammy Sosa is a baseball player that came to the MLB from the Dominican Republic and made his debut as a member of the Texas Rangers. Sosa spent a season and a half with Rangers before being traded to the White Sox and then spent two and half seasons there. During that time, Sosa really struggled to produced but everything began to change when the slugger was traded from the South Side of Chicago to the North Side, becoming a Cub prior to the 1992 season. Sosa’s breakout season came one year later in 1993, as he hit 33 home runs, with 93 RBI and 36 stolen bases.
In 1995, Sammy Sosa had his first All-Star season as he was once again a member of the 30-30 club with 36 home runs and 34 stolen bases, while in 119 RBI. This was the start of a nine-year stretch in which Sosa was one of baseball’s premier power hitters, hitting over 35 home runs and driving in over 100 runs every season. Sosa’s career will always be linked to Mark McGwire for what the two division rivals did all summer during the 1998 season, as they chased Roger Maris’ record of 61 home runs in a season. The two jockeyed for position for the league lead in home runs all season, with McGwire ultimately breaking the record of 62 home runs first and finishing ahead of Sosa with 70 home runs. Sosa’s season numbers were still insane though as he hit 66 home runs with 158 RBI and was rewarded with the National League MVP award. Sosa once again eclipsed 60 home runs and 150 RBI in the 2001 season when he hit 64 longballs and drove in 160 runs.
Sammy Sosa put up some of the greatest numbers in the history of the Cubs during his 13 years in Chicago. Sosa won six Silver Sluggers and was an All-Star seven times as he hit 545 home runs with 1414 RBI throughout his career as a Cub.
