Reilly Smith was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in the third round with the 69th pick. After spending three years at Miami University, Smith signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Dallas Stars. Smith spent parts of two seasons with the Stars before being traded to the Boston Bruins. In his time with the Bruins, Smith played in two full seasons and had 91 points and scored 33 goals. Following the 2014-15 season, Smith was traded to the Florida Panthers, who promptly signed him to a five-year $25 million deal.
Before the 2017-18 season, Smith was traded for a third time at the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft to the Vegas Golden Knights because of salary cap issues. Reilly was named as the alternate captain of the Knights and had a breakout season in the first of the franchise. Smith scored 22 goals and assisted in 38 for 60 points in 67 games played. The Golden Knights lead the Pacific Division in wins with 51 and a big part of that early success was the leadership of Smith.
