Phil Simms is one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the New York Giants for his 15 years in the NFL. Simms did not go to a big-time University for his college football but instead went to Morehead State, a Division II school. Simms did not have awfully impressive offensive numbers in college, throwing 13 more interceptions than touchdowns and was not considered a top quarterback heading into the 1979 NFL Draft. Still, Simms impressed the Giants so much that he was picked with the seventh overall pick in the first round of the draft. As a rookie Simms won his first five starts and ended up going 6-4 on the season.
Simms struggled with consistency during the early parts of his career as he had to endure injuries and lack of playing time before really asserting himself as a starter in 1984. That year was the first in which he started 16 games and Simms led the Giants to a 9-7 record while throwing for career-highs in yards and touchdowns with 4,044 passing yards and 22 home runs. Simms was a Pro Bowler for the first time in 1985 and then led the Giants to a 14-2 record a year later in 1986. The Giants would go all the way to the Super Bowl and Simms have one of the best games in the history of the Super Bowl. Simms completed 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards, which set Super Bowl records for consecutive completions with 10, completion percentage at 88% and a passer rating of 150.9. Simms also threw for three touchdowns as the Giants beat the Broncos 39-20 and he was named the Super Bowl XXI Most Valuable Player.
Phil Simms spent his entire 14-year as a member of the New York Giants, won two Super Bowls although he did not play in Super Bowl XXV due to injury. Fans of Phil Simms will always appreciate what he did in New York, winning the Super Bowl XXI MVP and being a part of two Super Bowl winning teams. Simms was still clearly a great quarterback during his era and was inducted into New York Giants Ring of Honor following his retirement. Now his fans can find amazing autographed collectibles that will highlight the best moments of Simms’s career.
