Orel Hershiser was an extremely productive and effective starting pitcher in the MLB for the better part of two decades. Hershiser did not debut until he was 24-years-old in 1983 but made an immediate impact for the Dodgers. By his third season, Hershiser was an elite starter for the Dodgers, with a record of 19-3 and a 2.03 ERA. The best three-year stretch of the pitcher’s career came between 1987-1989, in which he was an All-Star in all three years.
In 1988, Hershiser had one of the best single seasons in MLB history, highlighted by an incredible 59-inning scoreless innings streak. In Game 2 of the World Series, Hershiser threw a shutout and he then pitched another complete game in Game 5, allowing two runs but winning the game. Hershiser is the only player in MLB history to win the Cy Young Award, the NLCS MVP, and the World Series MVP all in one season. After spending the first 12 seasons of his career with the Dodgers, Hershiser spent three seasons in Cleveland with the Indians, one with the San Francisco Giants and another with the Mets. Hershiser finished his career in 2000 as a member of the Dodgers.
