Nat Holman was a professional basketball player. He was born in Bronx, New York and is credited as one of the innovators of the sport. Holman went by a number of nicknames including “Mr. Basketball”, “the Old Professor”, and “Drill Master”. Holman was not only player but also a coach and an author. His presence was felt for more than eight decades.
Holman went to New York University and was a star basketball player in the institution. Holman became popular for the way that he handled the ball and for his way of getting the ball into the ring. Holman was also a part of the Original Celtics. While playing with the team, he got a lot of recognition and was nicknamed as “Mr. Basketball”. Holman, together with the Original Celtics, introduced new methods of game play to the sport which help propel basketball into great popularity.
Holman decided to serve as coach for the City College of New York when he was still at his 20’s. At the same time, Holman continued to play professionally and only retired well into his thirties. Coaching CCNY, he helped the team win not just the NCAA but also the NIT, something that is yet to be replicated. Holman is in the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
