Larry Holmes is a retired professional boxer and is best known as “The Easton Assasin”. Holmes was raised in Easton, Pennsylvania and is credited as one of the boxers with the best left jabs. He was rated at heavyweight from 1978 all the way to 1985. Holmes was able to defend his heavyweight title for 25 times. Notably, Holmes has won over boxing legends such as Gerry Cooney, Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali. His accomplishments have set him as one of the best heavyweight boxers in the history of the sport.
It was only when Holmes when 19 when he started boxing. He had a record of 19-3 during as an amateur boxer and was earned a living as the sparring partner of Ali, Joe Frazier and Jimmy Young. But in 1978, Holmes was able to beat Earnie Shavers, the crowd favorite. After that fight, Holmes was able to take on Ken Norton for the WBC Heavyweight title. In a split decision, Holmes was able to take that fight.
Holmes was able to defend his title and decided to relinquish the WBC Heavyweight title in 1982 and decided to fight for the International Boxing Federation. After a crushing defeat by Michael Spinks in 1985 and again in 1986, Holmes retired.
