John Gilbert Wallace was born on February 9, 1974 in Rochester New York and played as a forward in the National Basketball Association. He stands 6 feet 8 inches and weighs 225 pounds. His first team in the NBA was the New York Knicks, who chose him as 18th in the 1996 draft.
Before going for the NBA, he graduated high school in the Greece Athena High School in Rochester, New York in 1992, and attended college in Syracuse University where he graduated in 1996. As a senior in Syracuse U, Wallace was named Second Team All- America by the AP in the 1995 to 1996 season.
He started his career with the Knicks in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers on December 1996. He recorded a rookie high in points in a game against the Boston Celtics in early 1997. His first appearance in the NBA playoffs was in the same year. After one season with the Knicks, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors on October 10, 1997 in a three- way deal with the Portland Blazers. His first game with the Raptors was against Miami Heat in October 31, 1997. He scored a career high in points twice in the 1997 to 1998 season twice. He did these in a game against the Boston Celtics and another against the Atlanta Hawks. Wallace made a season high in points and rebounds against the Milwaukee Bucks in April 1999. He then went back to the Knicks as a free agent in August of 1999. That same year, Wallace scored a season- high in points and rebounds in a game against the New Jersey Nets.
