Henrik Zetterberg was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the seventh round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to have an unbelievable career. In his first season with the Red Wings in 2002, Zetterberg led all first-year players with 22 goals and 22 assists for 44 points. In the 2005-06 season, Zetterberg was a breakout star with 85 points and 39 goals scored. He was also named the teams alternate captain that season and formed a great line with teammates Tomas Holmström, Mikael Samuelsson, Nicklas Lidström and Niklas Kronwall. Those five were all Swedish players and would be dubbed the “Swedish Five” playing together on the international team that won the gold medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics as well as with the Red Wings.
In the 2007-08 season, Zetterberg had another great year in which he had personal bests of 43 goals, 49 assists, and 92 points in just 75 games. Zetterberg than helped lead the Red Wings to the Stanley Cup Finals as he scored 27 points throughout 22 playoff games. In the Game 6 of the Finals, Zetterberg scored the game-winning goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP. Zetterberg is now the team captain of the Red Wings and has played over 1,000 games with them in his career. He is one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise.
