Known as “The Silver Fox” and “The Duck of Flatbush”, Duke Snider is one of the greatest players in the history of the Dodgers franchise. Debuting for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 at the age of 20, Snider experienced his breakout season in his third year in the MLB back in 1949. Snider hit .292 with 23 home runs and 92 RBI. What followed from 1950-1956 was seven-straight All-Star seasons in which Snider eclipsed 100 RBI six times and 40 home runs four times. Snider’s 1955 season was probably the best of his career as he led the league in RBI with 136 and finished second to his teammate Roy Campanella in the MVP voting. The Dodgers would square off against the New York Yankees in the World Series in 1955 and Brooklyn came out victorious.
Following the 1957 season, Snider’s production tailed off, but he remained a contributing member for the Dodgers for another five seasons. Those five seasons took place in Los Angeles though, as the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to L.A. In 1959, Snider and the Dodgers won yet another World Series, this time against the Chicago White Sox. Overall, Snider spent 16 seasons as a member of the Dodgers and upon his retirement, they also retired his No. 4 jersey. “The Silver Fox” spent two more seasons in the MLB after leaving the Dodgers, one in a return to New York with the Mets and the other with the San Francisco Giants.
