Don Larsen is a former MLB pitcher that pitched 15 seasons for seven different teams. His career began with the St. Louis Browns, later joining the Baltimore Orioles. After the 1954 season, Larsen was part of a 17 player trade that sent him to the New York Yankees. Larsen spent five seasons as a member of the Yankees and had a record of 45-24 during that span with an ERA of 3.50.
While his Yankees career was altogether solid, his incredible performance in the 1956 World Series game against the Brooklyn Dodgers truly defined him. With the series tied 2-2, Larsen got the nod to pitch Game 5 and would go on to throw the first, and only, perfect game in the history of the World Series. It took Larsen just 97 pitches to finish off the Dodgers, as only one batter got to a 3-ball count. After he struck out the last batter looking for the 27th out of the game, Yogi Berra leaped into Larsen’s arms for an image that will never be forgotten in baseball history.
Don Larsen will always be remembered by Yankees fans for pitching his perfect game in the 1956 World Series. That performance won Larsen the World Series MVP and ensured his place amongst Yankees lore forever.
