Dirk Nowitzki is a professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association. He plays as the Dallas Mavericks’ power forward. Nowitzki’s height, at 7 feet, has helped him achieve much basketball success.
Dirk Nowitzki was always a tall kid, and his height and talent were immediately recognized by former German international basketball player Holger Geschwindner who helped commit Nowitzki to a full-time training schedule. Training alongside future German international players Robert Garrett, Marvin Willoughby, and Demond Greene, Dirk Nowitzki made the DJK Wurzburg team in 1994. The German international basketball coach Dirk Bauermann named Nowitzki as the “greatest German basketball talent of the last 10, maybe 15 years.” Skipping college, Dirk was projected to be the seventh pick in the 1998 NBA draft, and was ultimately selected as the ninth pick by the Milwaukee Bucks; however, he was immediately traded to the Dallas Mavericks and has stayed with the franchise ever since. From 2001-2012, as well as 2014-2016, Nowitzki has helped the Mavericks to 15 NBA Playoffs, a 2006 Finals appearance, and 2011 championship game. In the 2002 FIBA World Championship, he earned a bronze medal with the German national basketball team, as well as a silver medal in EuroBasket 2005. The leading scorer of both tournaments, Dirk Nowitzki showcased tremendous talent and was also the MVP in both as well. In addition to being named as the Euroscar European Basketball Player of the Year, Dirk was also named the 2005 Mister Europa European Player of the Year and the 2005, as well as the 2011 FIBA Europe Men’s Player of the Year. One of seven players to play in at least 20 NBA seasons, Dirk Nowitzki holds numerous records such as the second NBA player to play his whole NBA career with a single team, one of six players to achieve over 30,000 regular-season points, and the top scoring foreign player in NBA history. He has also made 15 NBA playoffs with the Mavericks, appeared in 13 All-Star Games, and a dozen All-NBA Team games. He is also the first European player to start in an All-Star Game and is the first Dallas Mavericks’ player to be voted onto the All-NBA Team. Along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Nowitzki ties for the League’s only player to achieve four consecutive 30-point, 15-rebound post-season games. With at least 31,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists, 1,000 steals, 1,000 blocks and 1,000 3-point field goals, Nowitzki is the only player to record these outstanding statistics.
