Captain America is probably the most perfect nickname ever given to the greatest American soccer player in history. Clint Dempsey came from a small town in Texas, where no one expected him to be this great except for one person… himself. Dempsey played college soccer at Furman University, and enjoyed 3 great seasons there before being drafted eighth overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution.
After a couple of very successful years with the Revolution, Dempsey made a high-profile switch to Fulham, in a $4 million transfer which at the time was the highest transfer fee paid for an MLS player. With the Cottagers, Dempsey became the first American to score a hat-trick in the Premier League, he became Fulham’s top scorer in the Premier League, and he became the highest scoring American in a top-tier European league. Dempsey would also go on to play for Tottenham in a $9.6 million deal (also a record fee for an American), and would end his career back home with the Seattle Sounders. As great as he is at club level, Clint Dempsey was even better with his country. Clint Dempsey is tied for first in goals scored for the USMNT with 57, and is in the top 5 of appearances made with 141. Dempsey also holds the record for fastest goal scored in a World Cup by an American thanks to his strike against Ghana just 29 seconds into the game. With that goal, Dempsey also became the first American to score in 3 World Cups.
Clint Dempsey retired in 2018, and left behind a legacy that you only see in movies. A small-town kid rising to fame, eventually becoming the greatest soccer player the United States has ever seen.
