Popular as “Li’l Abner”, Cliff Hagan is a retired professional basketball player for the NBA. He played in the league from 1956 to 1966. Hagan only played for the St. Louis Hawks while in the NBA. Hagan also coached for the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association in 1967 all the way to 1970.
Hagan attended the University of Kansas and played for the institution’s basketball varsity team. In 1951, he was in second year when he was able to help the team secure a win against Kansas State University. After graduating in 1953, Hagan was eligible to enter the NBA Draft and was picked by the Boston Celtics during the third round. His teammates from the University of Kansas, Ramsey and Tsioropoulos, were also selected by the Celtics.
Instead of playing in the NBA, Hagan decided to serve in the military for two years where he played in the Worldwide Air Force basketball and became champion. After serving in the military, Hagan played for the Hawks after he was traded by the Celtics. Hagan was able to help the Hawks secure their 1958 NBA championship win against the Celtics.
Hagan was named into five NBA All-Star Games (1958-62). He was inducted in 1978 into the Basketball Hall of Fame making him the first University of Kentucky alumnus to be included.
