Brad Gilbert is a former professional tennis player who is currently a tennis coach and a tennis commentator as well. He was born on August 9, 1961 in Oakland, California. He played college tennis in Foothill College in California. He bagged the California Junior College Singles Championship and the U.S. Amateur Hardcourt Championship as a player of the said college. In 1982, he was able to reach the NCAA Championship, this time, representing Pepperdine University. That same year, he joined the professional tour and achieved his first ever top-level singles title in Taipei. In 1985, he had his first doubles title in Tel Aviv. Statistics reveal that he won 20 top-level singles title in his entire career as a player. The biggest title he had was in the Cincinnati event in 1989, where he deafeated Pete Sampras, Michael Chang, Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg, who were all future Hall of Famers. Among his best performances at Grand Slam were at the 1987 U.S. Open and in the Wimbledon in 1990.
According to statistics, Gilbert’s win-loss record for his entire career was 519-288. He belonged to the top-10 players in United States during the first nine years of his professional tour. A Davis Cup record holder for his 7-1 hard courts and carpet, he was also able to win the bronze medal in the men’s singles in 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul. He retired as a player in 1994 and became a coach for top athletes like Andre Agassi, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick.
