Hall of Famer Billy Herman was a professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball and is best remembered for both his defensive and batting skills. Herman occupied the second baseman position while playing in the majors and was active during the early thirties all the way to the late forties as a player. Herman also served as manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Sox. Born and raised in New Albany, Indiana, Herman went to New Albany High School.
Herman was already playing in the Louisville team of the American Association when he was purchased by the Chicago Cubs in 1931. That very year, Herman was able to make his MLB debut. It was during the 1932 season that Herman started to turn heads with his excellent play, hitting a solid batting average of .314. Herman had a career-high .341 BA during the 1935 season. Herman’s batting average was always in the .300s and such consistency earned him a lot of respect from players. Throughout the course of his career, Herman was able to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates as well. But most notable, Herman was named into ten consecutive All-Star selections from 1934 to 1943.
