He first played football at the Central High School in Detroit. At first, he has a big interest in playing basketball so he switched to Eastern Michigan University to play such sport. Gates played as Golden Flashes power forward in two seasons and he had successfully led the team to an Elite Eight spot in the year 2002 and also to the MAC championship game. He opted to work out for the San Diego Chargers after he was contacted by 19 teams. When the Chargers saw his power in the sport, they immediately offered him a contract.
He finished a solid 2003 rookie season with 24 passes for 389 yards and two scores. In the same year, Gates was taken by the Drew Brees and he became the team’s quarterback. He finished the season with 81 receptions for 964 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was chosen to the 2005 Pro Bowl. In August 2005, he inked a six-year deal with the San Diego Chargers at a very big amount. It was in 2006 when he had a relatively quiet start but then he finished the year with 924 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
