Al Kaline did not play a single game in the Tigers minor league system as he went straight from high school to the major leagues with the Detroit Tigers. In his second full season and first All-Star season, Kaline hit .340 while finishing the year with 200 hits, 27 home runs, and 100 RBI. He became the youngest player to win an American League batting title that season, as he was just 20 years old. This was the first of 13 straight All-Star seasons for Kaline, for which he provided an incredible defense to go with his offensive production as he won 10 Gold Gloves for his work in the outfield.
In 1968, Kaline missed a few months of the season with a broken arm before returning for the playoff push. The Tigers would go all the way to the World Series, the only time Kaline time played in one during his career, winning it all against the Cardinals. With Cardinals up 3-1 in the series and leading in Game 5 by a run, Kaline got a hit with the bases loaded to give the Tigers the lead. Detroit would hold on to win that game, as well as the next two for their first World Series win since 1945. In the series, Kaline hit .379 with two home runs and eight RBI.
