The Washington Capitals are an NHL team based in Washington D.C. that plays in the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals have played their home games in the Capitol One Arena since 1997. The Capitals came into the league in 1974 as an expansion team. The Capitals are currently in the middle of the best run in the franchise’s history led by Alexander Ovechkin. Ted Leonsis bought the team in 1999 and was able to turn the franchise around by selecting future star players Nicklas Backstrom, Ovechkin, Braden Holtby and Jakub Vrana.
Back in 2009-10, the Capitals won the franchises first ever Presidents’ Trophy as they scored more points in the regular season than any team in the NHL. They won the trophy again in 2015-16 and 2016-17 but struggled to find postseason success until 2018. Prior to the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Capitals had only made the Finals once in 1998 and hadn’t passed the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs since then either. In the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs that got over the hump by finally beating their rivals, Sidney Crosby, and the Penguins, in the Conference Semifinals. They then overcame a 3-2 deficit in the Eastern Conference Finals to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning in a seven-game series to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals where they would face the Vegas Golden Knights. After losing Game 1 in Vegas, the Caps bounced back to rattle off four straight wins to claim their first Stanley Cup title in franchise history. Game 1 was a high scoring affair which saw Vegas win 6-4 at home, but Game 2 was highlighted by a miraculous save by Braden Holtby to deny Alex Tuch late in the third period to preserve the Caps one-goal lead and head back to D.C. with the series even. In Games 3 and 4, the Caps jumped out early on the Golden Knights and did not let up and took a 3-1 series lead back to Vegas. After a scoreless 1st period, Jakub Vrana opened the scoring in the 2nd period which saw a total of five goals and the Golden Knights taking a 3-2 lead into the 3rd period. However, the Capitals battled back with Devante Smith-Pelly tying the game at 3 at the halfway mark of the period and then Lars Eller scoring the series-clinching goal to deliver the first ever Stanley Cup to the D.C. area. Evgeny Kuznetsov would finish with a Capitals playoff record 32 points and Alex Ovechkin was the leading goal-scorer throughout the playoffs and earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup Final.
