Historical Milestones
The Vancouver Canucks are an NHL team that plays in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The Canucks play their home games at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver entered the league as an expansion team in 1970 with the Buffalo Sabres. The Canucks have yet to win the Stanley Cup, but they have won their conference three times to move on to the Stanley Cup finals, they just have not been able to win it all. In the 1982 Stanley Cup playoffs, the Canucks made their first run in team history. Up to that point, the Canucks had not won a single playoff series and they were able to make it to the Stanley Cup that year. Vancouver ultimately got swept the New York Islanders. That roster featured stars in Thomas Gradin, Stan Smyl, Ivan Boldirev and Curt Fraser. Smyl is one of four players that have had their number retired by the Canucks, the other three are Pavel Bure, Trevor Linden, and Markus Naslund.
In 1994, behind the play of goaltender Kirk McClean, the Canucks made it to their second Stanley Cup Finals and were defeated by the New York Knicks. The third Stanley Cup run for the Canucks came in the 2010-11 NHL season. In the regular season that year, Vancouver won the Presidents trophy for most goals scored behind the lead of twin brother Daniel and Henrik Sedin. In the Stanley Cup Finals, the Boston Bruins defeated the Canucks. Vancouver would go on to win their second straight Presidents trophy but did not make a great run to the finals in the playoffs. Following the 2017-18 season, the Sedin brothers announced their retirement from the NHL leaving a big hole in the team’s roster.
