Historical Milestones
The Edmonton Oilers were founded in 1972 as members of the World Hockey Association. The WHA operated as a professional hockey league from 1972 to 1979 before merging with the NHL in 1979. The Oilers now play in the Pacific Division in the Western Conference. In their history, they have won five Stanley Cup Championships and seven conference titles.
In the earliest days of the Oilers franchise, they played in Alberta before moving to Edmonton permanently in 1973. The most important moment in franchise history came when they acquired future Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky at only the age of 18. Gretzky would go on to become one of the greatest players in NHL history and one of the most iconic sports figures of all-time, receiving the nickname the “Great One” over the course of his career. Gretzky along with goaltender Grant Fuhr and forward Mark Messier won Stanley Cup titles in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988 with the Oilers. In 1988 the Oilers traded Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings but they still managed to win another Stanley Cup title in 1990 with goalie Bill Ranford winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. The 1990 championship was the final championship in the organization’s history and the fifth title in seven years for the Oilers dynasty. After their last Stanley Cup title, the team experienced moderate success throughout the 1990s and early-2000s until they won the Western Conference title in 2006. At the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, the Oilers lost in a thrilling seven-game series to the Carolina Hurricanes. The franchise would not return to the playoffs until finishing the 2016-2017 NHL season with a record of 47-26 before bowing out in the second round of the playoffs. Today superstars Connor McDavid and Adam Larsson are leading the organization into a new era as the team is on a mission to reclaim their past success.
