Historical Milestones
The Detroit Red Wings are one of the most successful and iconic franchises in all of professional sports. The Red Wings have won eleven Stanley Cup titles which is the third most among NHL franchises. This Eastern Conference team plays in the Atlantic Division and is one of the “Original Six” hockey teams that played in the NHL during the 1942-1943 season. Originally known as the Cougars when founded in 1926 this franchise changed their name to the Falcons and eventually to the Red Wings in 1932.
The Red Wings first taste of success came during the 1933-1934 NHL season when they won the American Division and played in their first ever Stanley Cup Final. The Wings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks but they would go on to win back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1936 and 1937, with the legendary John Sorrell on their roster. In 1943 they won another Stanley Cup title and in 1946 the organization might have had its most significant moment in franchise history when they signed future Hall of Famer Gordie Howe. Howe led the team to four Stanley Cup titles and played with the organization until 1971, winning six Hart Memorial and six Art Ross Trophies along the way. After the departure of Howe they would struggle to find success but in 1983 they selected Steve Yzerman with the fourth overall pick of the NHL Draft marking a new era in the franchise. Beside Yzerman, the Red Wings would add future Hall of Famers Sergei Fedorov and Brendan Shanahan and they would go on to win Stanley Cup titles in 1997, 1998, and 2002. In 2008 they won another Stanley Cup title defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games and Henrik Zetterberg received the Conn Smythe Trophy. Zetterberg and Niklas Lidstrom led the franchise to another Western Conference title in 2009, which was the last one that the organization has won. Recently the organization has fallen on hard times missing the playoffs but with superstars such as Justin Abdelkader, Dylan Larkin, and Anthony Mantha on the roster it will not be long before they are ready to compete for titles again.
