Historical Milestones
The Calgary Flames’ history can be traced all the way back to Atlanta. From the 1972-73 NHL season through the 1979-80 season the Flames played in Atlanta before moving to Calgary. The team now plays in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, playing their home games in Scotiabank Saddledome. During their impressive history, the organization has won a Stanley Cup title, three Western Conference Championships, and the Presidents’ Trophy twice.
Upon their birth as a franchise in 1972, the Atlanta Flames had a relatively successful run during their time in Atlanta. Under Head Coaches Bernie Geoffrion and Fred Creighton, they made it to the playoffs in six of the eight years that they played in Atlanta. After moving to Calgary in 1980 the franchise soon acquired legends, Lanny McDonald and Kent Nilsson. Nilsson still holds the franchise points in a single season record with 131 which was set during the 1980-1981 season and McDonald set the goals scored in a single season record with 66 which was set over the course of the 1982-1983 season. The Flames were one of the league’s most competitive teams throughout the 1980s, winning their first Western Conference title in 1986 before losing to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals. In 1988 and 1989 the Flames finished with the best record in the NHL, winning their only two Presidents’ Trophies in franchise history. The 1988-89 season was a particularly memorable one for the organization because they captured the only Stanley Cup Championship in franchise history that year when they defeated the Canadiens in six games at the Stanley Cup Finals. After winning the Stanley Cup the organization remained competitive qualifying for the playoffs in every season through 1996 except for one. Starting in the 1996-97 season the team would not qualify for the playoffs again until 2004. The team was led during the 2003-204 season by superstars Jarome Iginla and Craig Conroy, winning another Western Conference Championship that year. At the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals, they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in an epic seven-game series and have not returned to the Stanley Cup Finals since. Recently the organization has displayed signs of becoming contenders once again with the additions of All-Star Johnny Gaudreau and new Head Coach Bill Peters.
