Historical Milestones
The Buffalo Sabres played their first season in the National Hockey League from 1970-1971. Throughout their history they have advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals twice, losing in each appearance. They won the Presidents’ Trophy once, during the 2006-2007 season when they posted a franchise high 53 wins that season. The Sabres have also won six division titles in their existence and currently play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
As one of two expansion teams in 1970, the Sabres were awarded the first overall pick of the NHL Draft and chose wisely, with the selection of future Hall of Famer Gilbert Perreault. The franchise drafted future All-Star Rick Martin with the fifth overall pick of the 1971 NHL Draft and traded for Rene Robert in 1972 creating what would later be known as “The French Connection”. This line of French Canadians played together through the 1978-79 NHL season, leading the Sabres to their first ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1975. Over the course of the 1980s and 1990s, the team remained competitive, making it to the playoffs regularly. A key moment in franchise history came when they traded for goaltender Dominik Hasek in 1992. Hasek went on to have a Hall of Fame career and become one of the greatest players in NHL history. With this legendary goalie in net, the Sabres advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals for a second and the most recent time in the organization’s history in 1999, but they lost to the Dallas Stars in six games. In recent years the team has had difficulty qualifying for the NHL Playoffs but with the emergence of top drafts picks like Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart this organization has a very bright future ahead.
