The Anaheim Ducks are one of the newest NHL franchises but are rich in history. This franchise played their first season in the NHL during the 1993-94 season when they were known as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, a name that they kept until 2006. Currently, the Ducks play in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division and have won two Western Conference titles and a Stanley Cup Championship during their impressive history. Originally they were owned by Disney and there was a film and television series named after the organization which helped grow the team’s popularity when they were starting out.
The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were led in their early days by All-Stars Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne. These two superstars led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in 1997 and Selanne holds the all-time records for points and goals scored in the organization’s history. He also set the franchise’s single-season record for goals scored during the 1997-1998 season with 52 and the single-season points record with 109 in 1996-97. In 2003 the team won its first Western Conference Championship and faced the New Jersey Devils in an epic seven games series which they lost. An interesting fact about this Stanley Cup Final is that the Ducks’ goaltender, Jean-Sebastien Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy in a losing effort, making him one of only five players in NHL history to achieve that feat. They returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2007, facing off against the Ottawa Senators. The Ducks defeated the Senators in five games and defenseman Scott Niedermayer was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy. Since the 2002-03 NHL season, the franchise has only failed to qualify for the playoffs three times, making them one of the winningest teams in the league. Today the team is led on the ice by veterans such as right winger Corey Perry and center Ryan Getzlaf along with younger stars like Rickard Rakell. This organization is in great hands with Head Coach Randy Carlyle returning to the team in 2016, he had previously coached the Ducks from 2005-2011, previously leading them to their only Stanley Cup title.
