Historical New England Patriots Milestones
The New England Patriots are an NFL team and are a part of the American Football Conference (AFC) East Division. Located in Foxborough, Massachusetts, roughly 20 miles southwest of downtown Boston, they play their home games in Gillette Stadium. Originally a part of the American Football League (AFL), the Pats entered the National Football League (NFL) in 1970 when the two leagues merged. Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the team changed their name when they made their move to Foxborough in 1971.
The Patriots have nine Super Bowl appearances, the most of any franchise in league history. However, seven of the nine have come after the arrival of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Brady got his start after an injury to star quarterback Drew Bledsoe, so not much was expected from the back-up. Nevertheless, Brady, Belichick and company put the wheels in motion for a dynasty that would span almost two decades. Since the 2001 season, they have won 14 out of 16 AFC East Division titles, set countless team records including longest winning streak (21), most consecutive division titles (8). Their first championship came in Super Bowl XXXVI as 21 point underdogs as they upset the St. Louis Rams with a game-winning kick by team legend Adam Vinatieri as time expired. Two years later, Vinatieri would solidify his status as New England hero by once against nailing the game-winning field goal as time expired to defeat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII. The Patriots would beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX and go back-to-back and win their third Super Bowl in four years, undoubtedly making them the next dynasty in the NFL. The Pats continued to have great regular season success, however another Super Bowl win eluded them for many years. Even after becoming the first NFL team to go 16-0 in the regular season, they lost to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII to continue their championship drought. The Patriots continued success is attributed to their franchise structure and consistency. This stems from their future Hall of Fame head coach and quarterback, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. They went on to win Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks in spectacular fashion as Malcom Butler intercepted Russell Wilson’s attempt at a game-winning touchdown. And just when you didn’t think it could get any crazier than a game saving interception, the Patriots overcame a Super Bowl record, 25-point deficit in Super Bowl LI vs the Atlanta Falcons to win their 5th Super Bowl. The Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl in Super Bowl LIII (53) by defeating the Rams. They are now tied for the most Super Bowl titles in NFL history.
Not just one of the NFL’s most storied franchises, but in all of sports, the New England Patriots have had an unprecedented run spanning almost two decades. A part from great team success, many Pats players have reached Hall of Fame status with the team. With stars like Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, and many others, any memorabilia collection would not be complete without adding a piece of this legendary franchise.
