Historical Milestones
The Detroit Lions were first established in 1930 under the name the Portsmouth Spartans. Over the course of their storied history, the Lions won four NFL Championships in 1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957. The Lions are members of the North Division in the NFC where they battle their divisional rivals the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and the Minnesota Vikings each twice a year. This franchise holds a couple of distinctions that their fans would like to change, they are the only NFC team to never appear in the Super Bowl and have the second longest championship drought in the NFL. This franchise has also become a part of American culture playing a game every Thanksgiving Day for the entire country to watch on national television.
Soon after being established the Lions captured a title in 1935. Hall of Fame tailback Dutch Clark played an important role in leading them to the 1935 title over the New York Giants 26-7. During the 1950s the Lions emerged as one of, if not the most dominant team of the decade, capturing three NFL titles along the way. Quarterback Bobby Layne led them to titles in 1952, 1953, and 1957. Layne was a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro who led the NFL in passing yards twice. They would go on to struggle throughout the 1970s and 1980s but were able to draft Barry Sanders with the third overall pick of the 1989 NFL Draft. Sanders rushed for 15,269 yards from 1989-1998 with the team and won the 1997 NFL MVP Award. After Sanders’ retirement, they once again struggled for years to make the playoffs but have rebounded recently. With Matthew Stafford at quarterback and Head Coach, Matt Patricia as their leader the Lions is primed to return to their championship-winning ways.
