Historical Milestones
The Denver Broncos are one of the most successful franchises in NFL history. The Broncos have won eight AFC titles and three Super Bowl titles. Prior to joining the NFL in 1970, the franchise was a member of the American Football League. They belong to the AFC’s Western Division along with their foes the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Los Angeles Chargers. The Broncos call Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium home where they have a great home field advantage because of the difficulties that opponents have playing at 5,280 feet above sea level.
While playing in the AFL the Broncos had very little on-field success. One bright spot for the organization was Floyd Little, a running back who played for them from 1967-1975. During his career, he was named to the First-Team All-Pro once and to the Pro Bowl Team five times. The Broncos won their first AFC title in 1977 after a 12-2 regular season. Craig Morton was their quarterback that season, passing for 14 touchdowns and winning the NFL AP Comeback Player of the Year Award along the way. In 1983 John Elway was traded to the Broncos, a move that would have a huge impact on the franchise and the NFL as a whole. Elway led the franchise to five Super Bowl appearances, winning Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII in his final two seasons. Running back Terrell Davis also played an important role in their late-1990s success, leading the league in rushing yards in 1998 and being named the MVP of Super Bowl XXXII. Since Elway’s retirement, they have gone on to win another Super Bowl title this time led by the legendary Peyton Manning. Manning joined the Broncos for the final four years of his NFL career from 2012-2015. At Super Bowl 50 their defense overwhelmed the high-powered offense of the Carolina Panthers. Led by Super Bowl MVP Von Miller the Broncos dominated the Panthers by the score of 24-10. Head Coach Vance Joseph and quarterback Case Keenum now look to lead the franchise into a new era of success that their fans have grown accustomed too.
