Founded by the legendary Head Coach Paul Brown the Cincinnati Bengals began playing in the American Football League during the 1968 season. The Bengals played in the AFL until the merger with the NFL in 1970. Today the Bengals play in the AFC’s North Division, playing their home games in Paul Brown Stadium. The franchise has won two conference titles but lost in the Super Bowl to the San Francisco 49ers both times at Super Bowls XVI and XXIII.
The Bengals experienced immediate success upon entering the AFL, Brown was named the Coach of the Year in 1969 and in their first year in the NFL in 1970 they won an AFC Central Division title. The Bengals selected a quarterback, Ken Anderson, in the 1971 NFL Draft and he played for the franchise until 1986. Anderson was a four-time Pro Bowler and named the 1981 AP Offensive Player of the Year and the 1981 NFL MVP. In 1981 and 1988 the franchise had Super Bowl appearances under Head Coaches Forrest Gregg and Sam Wyche respectively. Since 2003 Marvin Lewis has led the Bengals as their head coach and they have won multiple division titles with quarterbacks Carson Palmer and Andy Dalton, followed now by Joe Burrow.
