About Washington Wizards Autographed Memorabilia & Collectibles

Historical Milestones

The Washington Wizards are an NBA team that plays in the Eastern Conference’s Southeast Division. The Wizards play in the Capitol One Arena in Washington D.C. While the Wizards now play in Washington the franchise was established in 1961 in Chicago and the team name was originally the Packers but just a few years later they moved to Baltimore becoming the Bullets. They remained the Bullets until 1997 when they were rebranded as the Wizards. The best era of the Wizards franchise was led by Wes Unseld in which they went to four NBA Finals and eventually won the title in 1978. Unseld is the only player in franchise history to win an MVP award and a Finals MVP award. He is also one of four players to win the Rookie of the Year award. Upon his retirement, the Washington organization retired his No. 41 jersey.

One of the most remembered stretches in Washington Wizards history was their years with Michael Jordan. Jordan originally came to Washington as a minority owner and was named the president of basketball operations but in the 2001-02 season, he came out of retirement to play at age 38. Jordan played two seasons with the Wizards but was unable to lead them to the playoffs in either one. A few years later, with Gilbert Arenas leading the team, in the 2004-05 season, the Wizards made the playoffs under that name for the first time and for the organization it was the first playoff appearance in 26 years. The Gilbert Arenas led Wizards went to the playoffs for four consecutive years before finally missing them in the 2008-09 season. Other notable great players in franchise history include Juwan Howard, Mitch Richmond, Caron Butler, and Chris Webber. Now with John Wall and Bradley Beal at the helm, the Wizards are once again one of the best team in the Eastern Conference.
