Historical Milestones
The San Antonio Spurs are an NBA team that plays in the Western Conference’s Southwest Division and plays their home games at the AT&T Center. The Spurs were initially a part of the ABA and they are one of the four teams from the ABA that are still intact from the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. After the ABA-NBA merger, Spurs player George Gervin became the teams first true superstar. During his career in San Antonio, Gervin All-NBA First team five times, an All-Star nine times and the NBA’s scoring champion four times.
In recent history the Spurs have been a model of consistency with a playoff streak that spans over 20 seasons under head coach Greg Popovich. The first piece in the Spurs run of success was the drafting of “The Admiral” David Robinson. In his first season following his service with the Navy, Robinson averaged 24.3 points and 12.0 rebound and led a team that was 21-61 in the previous season, to a record of 56-26. While he was great, Robinson could not get the team over the hump himself and the Spurs ended up being fortunate when he missed almost all of the 1996-97 season allowing them to win the draft lottery. With the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft, the Spurs selected Tim Duncan out of Wake Forest and everything changed for the franchise.
In the previous season before Duncan’s arrival Popovich, who was the general manager, became the head coach of the team. With the twin towers of Robinson and Duncan in place, the Spurs won their first NBA title in 1999 with Duncan being name the NBA Finals MVP. After winning the NBA title the Spurs drafted one of their franchises best players in Manu Ginobili in the second round of the 1999 NBA draft. Then in the 2001 NBA draft, the Spurs drafted French point guard Tony Parker and every piece was in place.
With Duncan, Robinson, Parker and Ginobili in place, the Spurs cruised on to win the 2003 NBA Finals and Robinson decided to retire while he was on top. With the Spurs “big three” of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili, Popovich led the team to win three more NBA titles in 2005, 2007 and more recently in 2014. The Spurs beat the Miami Heat’s Big Three in the 2014 NBA Finals with huge contributions from Kawhi Leonard who played great defense on LeBron James.
Currently the Spurs are led by one of the best front courts in the NBA of Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol with the young starting point guard Dejounte Murray primed for a breakout season in the near future.
