Historical Milestones
The New York Knicks are one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. With an estimated worth of 3.6 billion dollars, the Knicks are also considered the most valuable franchise in the NBA. They call the most famous arena on the planet their home, Madison Square Garden and have done so since 1968. Since the franchise was founded in 1946 this organization has become a part of not only the sports landscape but American culture as well.
During the early years of the franchise, they were led on the court by Head Coach Joe Lapchick. Lapchick had many successful seasons with the Knicks winning three Eastern Conference titles but failed to win any NBA titles during his run with the team. The Knicks would not win any conference titles during the 1960s but after Red Holzman became their head coach in 1967 they would start to lay the groundwork for the most successful years in franchise history. In the 1960s the organization drafted future Hall of Famers Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, and traded for another Hall of Famer Dave DeBusschere. The Knicks would win conference titles in 1970, 1972, and 1973, winning NBA titles in 1970 and 1973. For the rest of the 1970s and 1980s, the Knicks would not win another conference title but drafted Patrick Ewing with the first overall pick of the 1985 NBA Draft. Ewing went on to become one of the best centers in NBA history and during the 1990s the Knicks won Eastern Conference titles in 1994 and 1999, losing to the Houston Rockets and the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals respectively. Since their last Finals appearance in 1999 the team has had many great players wear their orange and blue uniforms including All-Star Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire but they have had difficulty sustaining success as an organization. In recent years there has been a new hope among fans after they drafted the 7’3” Kristaps Porzingis with the fourth overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. With Porzingis on the court and David Fizdale as their head coach, the Knicks are primed to return to their glory days.
