The Los Angeles Clippers have been a staple in the National Basketball Association since 1970. The league admitted multiple new expansion teams that seasons, one of them being the Buffalo Braves who later became the San Diego Clippers who eventually moved to Los Angeles in 1984. Throughout their history the organization has had a difficult time coming up with success on the court, only winning two divisional titles in franchise history. Even though the Clippers have not found much success on the court in their history they have still managed to establish a loyal fan base over the years.
During the franchise’s early years while they were known as the Buffalo Braves they were led by head coach Jack Ramsay. This Hall of Fame coach along with his Hall of Fame center and forward Bob McAdoo were able to clinch playoff berths multiple times while paired together. McAdoo even won the NBA MVP Award for the 1974-75 season averaging 34.5 points and 14.1 rebounds per game that season. After relocating to San Diego in 1979 the newly named Clippers signed future Hall of Famer Bill Walton who is a Southern California native to be the face of the franchise but he was unable to contribute much during his time there due to injuries. The team relocated again in 1984 to Los Angeles keeping their name this time, after years of poor play by the team and even worse attendance from the fans in San Diego. Throughout the next few decades the team would continue to fail to be competitive with a revolving roster of players that included former first round picks Lamar Odom, Michael Olowokandi, and Elton Brand. The franchise’s luck would change though in 2009 after they drafted Blake Griffin a future All-Star power forward with the first overall pick of the NBA Draft and traded for Chris Paul in 2011. The organization added other key pieces at this time such as drafting DeAndre Jordan and trading for J.J. Redick, creating a roster that was formidable enough to win back-to-back Pacific Division titles in 2013 and 2014. This group became known as “Lob City” and are the most successful roster that the franchise has had since moving to the West Coast. In recent years Paul, Redick, and Griffin have all left the franchise as it has gone into a rebuilding mode. The future remains extremely bright for this franchise with a passionate owner like Steve Balmer and an NBA Championship winning head coach in Doc Rivers.
