About Charlotte Hornets Autographed Memorabilia & Collectibles

Historical Milestones

The Charlotte Hornets played their first season in the NBA during the 1988-1989 season. The late-1980s was a time of growth for the NBA with the addition of the Hornets the Miami Heat in 1988 and the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves joined the league a year later. The team plays in the NBA’s Eastern Conference in the Southeast Conference and are yet to win any championships or division titles in their history. This organization likely has the most well-known owner in the NBA with Michael Jordan leading their ownership group.

During the early years of this franchise they struggled greatly on the court. But during the 1992-1993 season they had their first winning record and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the team’s history, before losing in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. It is no surprise that this was when their fortune began to turn around because they had selected Alonzo Mourning with the second overall pick of the 1992 NBA Draft. Mourning played for the Hornets from 1992 until he traded to the Heat in 1995, going on to have a Hall of Fame career and being named an All-Star seven times. The franchise continued to have moderate success through 2002, often qualifying for the playoffs but bowing out early. The Hornets moved to New Orleans after the 2001-2002 NBA season but Charlotte would be awarded another franchise in 2004. The new franchise now known as the Charlotte Bobcats played under that name until 2014 when the Hornets name was given back to the franchise. The Bobcats had no shortage of superstars on their roster over the course of their run from 2004-2014, including the 2004-2005 NBA Rookie of the Year Emeka Okafor and NBA All-Star Gerald Wallace. Since reacquiring the Hornets name they have qualified for the playoffs once and now under Head Coach James Borrego they are looking to turn a new page in their history. With a roster that includes first round picks such as Kemba Walker and Frank Kaminsky it would not be hard to imagine this team competing for an Eastern Conference Title in the near future.
