Historical Milestones
Sporting Kansas City is a soccer club that was one of the ten charter teams of the MLS that began playback in 1996. Known as the Wizards, they returned to playing the Western Conference in 2015 after spending ten seasons in the Eastern Conference. Playing their home games in Kansas City, Kansas, the Wizards are currently the only major professional sports team that plays in the state.
Sporting Kansas City has won two MLS Cups during their franchise’s history, the first being in 2000 and the second coming in 2013. In 2000, they also won the Supports’ Shield for having the best regular season of any team in the MLS. The U.S. Open Cup was named after Lamar Hunt, who just happened to found the Sporting Kansas City. Maybe it is due to his namesake hat they have won the U.S. Open Cup four times.
The 2000 Sporting Kansas City team that won the MLS Cup and the Supporters Shield featured great plays like Chris Klein, Peter Vermes, and the MLS Cup MVP goalkeeper Tony Meola. Maybe the best player on that team, and even in franchise history was Preki. Preki won two MLS MVP’s during his time in Kansas City and also won the MLS Golden Boot in each of those seasons scoring a league-best 41 points each year in 1997 and 2003.
