Historical Milestones
The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the winningest franchises in Major League Baseball history. The Cardinals have won 11 World Series titles and 19 National League Pennants. The organization has won the second most World Series Championships in MLB history only trailing the New York Yankees. This franchise was founded in 1882 as the St. Louis Brown Stockings and changed their names to the Browns and Perfectos before permanently becoming the Cardinals in 1900.
In the beginning years of the franchise, they did not have much success on the diamond. Second baseman Rogers Hornsby was a bright spot for the organization posting a .358 batting average and winning two National League MVP Awards during his career. Hornsby also served as the club’s manager when they won their first World Series in 1926 when they defeated the New York Yankees in seven games. The Cardinals returned to the World Series again in 1928 but lost to the Yankees in four games. Under Manager Gabby Street the team made it back to the World Series in 1930 and 1931, winning the 1931 Series over the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1934 they won another World Series title behind slugger Ripper Collins and future Hall of Fame pitcher Dizzy Dean. The 1940s were a particularly successful time for the franchise winning four NL Pennants from 1942-1946, even claiming World Series titles in 1942, 1944, and 1946. This dynasty was led by future Hall of Famers Enos Slaughter and Stan Musial. Musial was a three-time MVP who hit 475 home runs during his career. The organization experienced modest success until the 1960s when a new era of stars emerged for the team including All-Star catcher Tim McCarver and two-time Cy Young Award winner and two-time World Series MVP Bob Gibson. The franchise won World Series titles again in 1964 and 1967 as well as another Pennant in 1968. With Ozzie Smith as their shortstop, they won another World Series title in 1982 and would not win their championship until 2006 when slugging first baseman Albert Pujols and World Series MVP David Eckstein led them to a title. Their most recent title was won in 2011 with the help of David Freese’s heroics and in 2013 they won their most recent NL Pennant. With a mix of young and veteran stars on the team, the Cardinals are primed to compete for yet another championship under Manager Mike Matheny.
