In 1977 the Seattle Mariners played their first season in Major League Baseball. Prior to the Mariners Seattle had an MLB franchise called the Pilots that only played there in 1969 before moving to Milwaukee becoming the Brewers. The franchise played in the Kingdome from 1977 until moving into their current home Safeco Field in 1999. Over the course of their history, this organization has appeared in the playoffs four times, winning three American League West Titles along the way.
The Mariners struggled in their early days as a franchise, not having a winning season until 1991. One of the few bright spots for the franchise was Harold Reynolds who they selected with the second overall pick of the 1980 MLB Draft. Reynolds played with the franchise from 1983-1992, being named an All-Star twice and winning three Gold Glove Awards during his time there. A key moment in the franchise’s history came when they drafted Ken Griffey Jr. with the first overall pick of the 1987 MLB Draft. Griffey went on to become one of the greatest centerfielders in MLB history smashing 630 home runs and driving in 1,836 baserunners during his career. In 1987 one of the best hitters of all-time Edgar Martinez made his big league debut with the club and in 1989 future Hall of Famer and five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson was acquired in a trade. The Mariners also drafted Alex Rodriguez with the first overall pick of the 1993 MLB Draft making up one of the most talented rosters in history. In 1995 they won their first AL West Title by defeating the New York Yankees in an epic American League Division Series round that saw Martinez driving in Griffey in walk-off fashion, winning Game 5 by the score of 6-5. The next division championship that organization won was in 1997 and they also won the AL Wildcard in 2000. They won another one another division title in 2001, which is their most recent in team history. During the 2001 season, the Mariners broke the AL record for wins in the regular season and tied the MLB record by accumulating 116 wins that season. Unfortunately for them, they went on to lose to the Yankees in five games in the American League Championship Series. Since 2001 the franchise has not been back to the playoffs. The franchise is now ready for a new era, to begin with a roster of superstars including James Paxton, Robinson Cano, Dee Gordon, and Kyle Seager.
