Historical Milestones
The San Diego Padres played their first season in Major League Baseball in 1969. Since their founding, the team has played in the National League West Division. In their history, the franchise has won five division titles and two NL Pennants. The Padres moved into Petco Park in 2004 and have called it their home ever since.
In the early days of the franchise the Padres had difficulty finding wins on the diamond. After drafting Dave Winfield with the fourth overall pick of the 1973 MLB Draft they managed to have one of the first stars in the franchise’s history. Winfield played for the organization from 1973-1980 until he signed with the New York Yankees, during his time with the Padres he won multiple Gold Glove Awards and was an All-Star numerous times. The Padres had their first winning season in 1978 and won their first NL Pennant in 1984. They defeated the Chicago Cubs in the National League Championship Series before losing to the Detroit Tigers in five games in the World Series. In 1984 their right fielder Tony Gwynn led the NL in hits, batting average, and won a Silver Slugger Award, emerging as one of the best players in the game along the way. The organization did not qualify for the playoffs again until 1996 while playing under Manager Bruce Bochy. Bochy led the franchise to their second and most recent NL Championship and had a franchise high 98 wins during the 1998 season. The team struggled throughout the early-2000s before winning back-to-back division titles in 2005 and 2006. In 2007 Jake Peavy won the NL Cy Young Award, winning the NL Pitching Triple crown that year with a 2.54 ERA, 19 wins, and 240 strikeouts. In recent years the Padres have not found much success on the field but with the recent acquisitions of Eric Hosmer and Christian Villanueva, they are starting a new chapter in this organization’s history.
