Historical Milestones
The New York Mets are an MLB team that plays in the National League East division. The Mets have played their home games at Citi Field since 2009, which is located in Flushing, Queens. They were an expansion franchise that came into the league in 1962, for which the Mets had the worst record in MLB history of a 162 game schedule going 40-120 (with two games being canceled). The Mets would go on to shock the world in 1969 when they won the World Series. Future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver won the Cy Young award that season as he led the league with 25 wins, and he had help in the rotation with other great pitchers in Jerry Koosman and rookie Gary Gentry. Tom Seaver and the Mets would win another pennant in 1973, but they lost to the Athletics in the World Series.
One of the best teams in MLB history was the 1986 Mets, who have been known in history as the bad boys of baseball that won. The team featured great players like Lenny Dykstra, Keith Hernandez, Daryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden and future Hall of Famer Gary Carter. The Mets won 108 games that year and would win the World Series in iconic fashion against the Red Sox. In the sixth game of the series, the Red Sox were one out away from winning the World Series as they were winning 5-2. The Mets would ultimately battle back scoring three runs, capped off by a ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson that went through Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner’s legs that let the winning run come home. The Mets would go on to win Game 7 for their second championship.
Since 1986 the Mets have been to the World Series twice, in 2000 when they lost in the Subway Series against the Yankees, and again more recently in 2015 when they lost to the Royals. Over the last couple of season, including the World Series run of 2015, the Mets have featured one of the best starting rotations when healthy. This rotation once included Matt Harvey, who was traded in 2018 and still include Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler. Some of the young talented hitters on the Mets are outfielders Brandon Nimmo and Michael Conforto, with veterans like Yoenis Cespedes, and Jay Bruce expected to anchor the lineup.
