Historical Milestones
Mike Piazza is considered one of the best offensive catchers in the history of the MLB and he holds the record for the most home runs hit by a catcher with 396. After a cup of coffee with the Dodgers in the 1992 season, Mike Piazza had one of the best seasons for a rookie catcher in MLB history in 1993. Piazza won the Rookie of the Year award after hitting .318 with 35 home runs and 112 RBI. Piazza spent parts of seven seasons with the Dodgers and hit 177 home runs, 563 RBI with an incredible .331 batting average. Piazza won the Silver Slugger award in each of the five full seasons that he spent as the Dodgers starting catcher.
During the 1998 season, Piazza was traded to the Florida Marlins after contract disputes on a long-term extension with the Dodgers stalled. Piazza spent one week and played five games with the Marlins before being traded again to the New York Mets, for which he would spend a majority of his career. Piazza spent eight seasons with the Mets, won five more Silver Slugger awards and led them to their fourth ever NL Pennant in 2000 when they would square off against crosstown rivals the New York Yankees in the World Series. Piazza’s biggest moment as a New York Met came on September 21, 2001, ten days after the attacks on 9/11. It was the first sporting event to be hosted in the city of New York following the attacks as the Mets played a home game against the Atlanta Braves. In the eighth inning, with the Mets down 2-1, Piazza hit a game-winning two-run homer that would make him a hero in the city of New York forever. Mike Piazza chose to wear the Mets cap on his Hall of Fame plaque when he was inducted in 2016 and had his No. 31 jersey retired by the franchise that year as well.
