Historical Lawrence Taylor Milestones
No player in the history of the NFL has dominated the defensive side of the ball like New York Giants legendary linebacker, Lawrence Taylor. Taylor, better known as “LT”, was far and away the best defensive player of the 1980's and one of the most feared players in the league during his illustrious 13-year NFL career. Despite not having played organized football until the age of 15, Lawrence Taylor earned a spot on the team with the North Carolina Tar Heels and went on to dominate college football. UNC assistant coach, Bobby Cale referred to LT's style of play as "reckless" during his tenure at Chapel Hill. Taylor was an All-American and ACC Play of the Year at North Carolina before he was selected with the 2nd overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. The Giants linebacker's career could not have started off any better, as LT won both the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. There was no turning back for the great linebacker. Taylor went on to make the field his playground in the 1980's as he made the NFL Pro Bowl in every year throughout the decade except for 1980 when he was still in college. As the centerpiece for the dominant Giants defense that was known as "The Big Blue Wrecking Crew", Lawrence Taylor is recognized for being one of the players to revive the New York Giants. After several sufferable seasons in the 1970's, the Giants were poised to turn their franchise around. After drafting Taylor, the New York defense became incredibly stingy and the team began to legitimize themselves as a title contenders. Lawrence Taylor's spectacular and relentless on-field play led the New York Giants to their first ever Super Bowl win in Super Bowl XXI and second victory in Super Bowl XXV. Taylor's defensive greatness did not go unnoticed. LT was named AP Defensive Player of the Year three times during his career and was the league MVP in 1986. Lawrence Taylor was named to the NFL 1980's All-Decade Team and was also named as the NFL's third best player ever behind Jerry Rice and Jim Brown in the NFL's Top 100 Greatest Players of All-Time Countdown in 2010.
Throughout the entirety of his career, Lawrence Taylor etched his name in football history as one of the greatest of all time. As the most-dominant and feared defender in NFL history, opposing coaches didn't just game plan for Taylor, they changed their offensive schemes completely. Lawrence Taylor was an incredibly special player not only for the New York Giants but for the entire league. His hard-nosed attitude and killer instinct were unparalleled amongst players at his position and he deservedly earned a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999. Make this Hall of Famer the star of your collection and preserve his legacy with rare Lawrence Taylor memorabilia for your sports room or collection.
