After his junior season at Wichita State University, in which he was named The Sporting News magazine’s College Player of the Year, the Chicago Cubs drafted Joe Carter with the second overall pick in the 1981 MLB Draft. Carter made his debut with the Cubs in 1983, before being traded to the Cleveland Indians the next season. Carter would eventually break out as a star player with the Indians in 1986 as a slugging power hitter as he hit 29 home runs and 121 RBI. In his last four seasons as an Indian, Carter average 30 home runs and over 100 RBI per season.
The Indians traded Carter to the Padres prior to the 1990 season. He spent one season in San Diego and was later moved to the Toronto Blue Jays in another trade. Carter’s play would hit another level in Toronto as he was an All-Star for the first time as a Blue Jay, making the team in each of his first four seasons north of the border. He also won his only two Silver Sluggers in the 1991 and 1992 seasons. The Blue Jays won their first World Series in 1992 with the help of Joe Carter. Carter hit two home runs in that World Series but none as big as the one hit a year later.
The Blue Jays once again made the World Series in 1993 and squared off against the Philadelphia Phillies. In Game 6, the Blue Jays had a three to two lead in series but were trailing in the ninth inning down 6-5. Carter came up to the plate against pitcher Mitch Williams, with Rickey Henderson and Paul Molitor on base. With the count being two balls and two strikes, Carter hit a three-run walk-off home run that ended the World Series and brought the second straight championship to Toronto. This was the second walk-off home run that ended a World Series in MLB history, but the first to ever happened when the team was trailing before the home run was hit. Joe Carter formed one of the most iconic images in the history of the MLB as he jumped up and down as he rounded the bases with his arms outstretched.
