Historical Milestones
Jim Otto is a Hall of Fame center that played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders. After a career at the University of Miami, in which Otto played both center on offense and linebacker on defense, he did not draw any interest from NFL teams and was instead drafted to the American Football League in their 1960 AFL Draft. Otto was originally selected by a proposed franchise that would play in Minneapolis. That franchise ended up becoming the Minnesota Vikings, but they would play in the NFL instead of the AFL, which is why Ott’s draft rights fell into the laps of the Oakland Raiders.
Otto was a constant for the Raiders for 15 years as the team’s center and was remarkably durable, as he did not miss a single game. Oakland spent ten years in the AFL, before the AFL/NFL merger, while Otto was playing and all ten of those seasons resulted in Otto being named to the First-Team All-AFL. He was also an AFL All-Star nine times and with Otto’s help, the Raiders won the AFL Championship in 1967. Once the Raiders went into the NFL Otto showed to still be an elite talent, as he was First-Team All-Pro in his first two seasons in the NFL.
Die-hard Raiders fans will always love and appreciate the talents and legacy of Jim Otto. Otto spent his entire 15-year career with Oakland and after his retirement, he was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
