Historical Houston Astros Milestones
The Houston Astros have one of the richest histories in all of sports. Founded in 1962 the ‘Stros were originally named The Colt .45’s eventually switching their name to the Astros in 1964. Until 2012 the Astros played in the National League when they moved to the American League’s West. Over the course of the Astros decorated history they have won seven division titles and the 2005 National League Pennant along with the 2017 American League Pennant, becoming the first team to win a pennant in both leagues. Since 2000 the Astros have called Minute Maid Park their home after moving out of the legendary Astrodome which was the first sports stadium to have a dome and artificial turf.
The Houston Astros have had many iconic players wear their navy blue, orange, and white jerseys. Among those icons is starting pitcher Nolan Ryan who pitched for the Astros from 1980-1988. Ryan is a Hall of Famer, eight time All-Star, holds the record for most career strikeouts in MLB history with 5,714, and threw a staggering seven no-hitters. During the 1990s and early 2000s Hall of Famers Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell led the Astros on the diamond. Biggio is a four time Gold Glove and five time Silver Slugger Award winner who had over 3,000 career hits. Former first baseman Jeff Bagwell is one of the greatest hitters of Bagwell’s generation hitting 449 career home runs and was the recipient of the 1994 National League MVP Award. Jose Altuve has played for the Astros since debuting in the big leagues in 2011 and is a multiple time All-Star, Silver Slugger Award, and Batting Title Champion winner. The Astros finally won their first world championship in franchise history by winning the 2017 World Series defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers in 7 games to conclude one of the most memorable Fall Classic’s in baseball history. The two teams traded heavyweight blows all series long, as there was no shortage of excitement throughout all seven games. The 2017 Astros were undoubtedly the best team in baseball all season long and they showed it in the postseason.
