Historical Milestones
Hines Ward is a former American football wide receiver. Ward played 14 seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League, as well as helped them secure to Super Bowl championships: Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII.
Hines Ward was born in Seoul, South Korea before moving to the United States at the age of one. His career at Forest Park High School, as both a star football and baseball player, as well as the University of Georgia, as he committed to playing football for the team, presented his tremendous talent and great athleticism. At the end of his collegiate career, Ward adapted as a receiver, earned All-SEC honors, and finished as the team’s second all-time receiver with 144 catches. Despite suffering from health problems, Hines Ward’s professional career showcased him with the Pittsburgh Steelers, after he was drafted by the team in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He immediately played a dominant role on the Steelers’ offense with his toughness and determination. As Hines Ward signed a four-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the year 2001 showed some of the athlete’s best; he set a team record for single season receptions at 94 and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. Ward continued to play a key role for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he helped lead them to the 2001 AFC Championship before losing to the New England Patriots. In 2002, Ward finished his fifth and only ever season with over 100 receptions and with career highs of 1,329 receiving yards, 112 receptions, and 12 touchdown receptions. In 2003, he was voted to his third consecutive Pro Bowl, and in 2004 he finished the season with 80 passes caught for 1,004 receiving yards and four touchdowns. On November 13, 2005, Ward became the franchise’s all-time leading receiver with his 538th catch on ESPN Sunday Night Football. Playing in his first career Super Bowl, Ward’s outstanding performance in the 2006 Super Bowl XL made him one of two foreign born players to be awarded the MVP in Super Bowl XL. At the end of 2007, Ward became the Steelers' all-time leader in receiving yards and in 2008 he extended his League reception record at 800 receptions. In 2009, Ward helped the Steelers enjoy another Super Bowl win, the Super Bowl XLIII. Due to numerous injuries, Ward ultimately retired from professional football in the 2012. At the time, he was the last remaining Steelers’ player to have been playing with the team since the ‘90’s in Three Rivers Stadium.
Even with 14 post-season appearances, Ward achieved 76 receptions, 1064 yards, and eight receiving touchdowns, making him one of the NFL’s top wide receivers.
