Historical Milestones
The Nets’ history can be traced all the way back to the American Basketball Association. In their early days this franchise was known as the New Jersey Americans in their first season in the ABA in 1967-1968 and then as the New York Nets from 1968-1977. From 1977-2012 the team was the New Jersey Nets but in 2012 after moving again they have changed their name to the Brooklyn Nets. This team is a member of the Eastern Conference playing in the Atlantic Division and they call the state of the art arena, the Barclays Center their home.
The Nets were a staple of the ABA from 1967-1976. During their time in the ABA they won league championships in 1974 and 1976, the only titles in the franchise’s history. While in the ABA they had Julius Erving who was nicknamed “Dr. J” on their roster. Erving is one of the greatest basketball players to have ever lived and played an important role in their two championships, being named the Playoffs MVP both times. At the conclusion of the 1975-1976 season the ABA merged with the NBA, but only the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Indiana Pacers, and the Nets franchises joined the NBA. After joining the NBA in 1976 until 2001 they only managed to make it past the first round of the playoffs one time, which occurred in 1984. That team was led by Head Coach Stan Albeck and All-Stars Buck Williams and Otis Birdsong. Perhaps the most important moment in franchise history occurred in 2001 when they traded for point guard and future Hall of Famer Jason Kidd. Kidd led the Nets to their only Eastern Conference Championships in 2002 and 2003, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs, respectively in the NBA Finals. The years following their Eastern Conference Championship seasons the organization remained competitive even acquiring All-Stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett from the Boston Celtics in 2013. Today Kenny Atkinson serves as their head coach as he looks to lead the team into a new era with a roster full of talented and promising players.
