Historical Milestones
Greg Maddux is considered by many to be the greatest pitcher of his generation. Maddux pitched the majority of his big-league career for the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs, a career that spanned from 1986-2008. Both the Braves and the Cubs retired his No. 31 jersey, a unique distinction for a major league player. In 2014 he was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot, capturing 97.2% of the vote.
Over the course of Maddux’s impressive career he was named an All-Star eight times, the National League Pitcher of the Month 10 times, and the National League Player of the Week eight times. He was also one of the game’s best fielding pitchers as well, winning eighteen Gold Glove Awards. From 1992-1995 he won four consecutive National League Cy Young Awards and helped lead the Braves to a World Series title in 1995. This 355-game winner also led the National League in wins three times and the NL in ERA four times.
