Fran Tarkenton is the greatest quarterback in the history of the Minnesota Vikings. In Tarkenton’s first NFL game, he came off of the bench and led the Vikings to a come-from-behind victory in which he threw for 250 yard and four touchdown while adding one rushing. This was the only time that a player had thrown for four touchdown passes in his first NFL game until Marcus Mariota matched feat with the Titans in 2015. Tarkenton was a Pro Bowler twice with the Vikings during his first stint with the team, the first time being in 1964 and second in 1966. Following that second Pro Bowl season, Tarkenton was traded to the New York Giants.

In his first season with the team, Tarkenton threw for a career-high 29 touchdowns and for 3,088 yards. Tarkenton spent five years with the Giants and was a Pro Bowler in five of those seasons. After those five years, the Vikings traded to get Tarkenton back prior to the 1972 season. Tarkenton would go on to lead the Vikings to three straight NFC Conference championships but they ultimately lost in each Super Bowl. His best season was the 1975 season, for which he threw for 2,994 yards, 25 touchdowns to lead the league and led the Vikings to 12-2 record. Tarkenton won the MVP award as well as the Offensive Player of the Year award.
