Dick Butkus is one of the greatest linebackers in the history of the NFL and one of the most notable players in the history of the Chicago Bears franchise. Born and raised in Chicago, Butkus spent his entire football career within the state of Illinois, playing for the University of Illinois prior to coming into the NFL. In 1963, Butkus won the Big Ten Most Valuable Player award and was later drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears.
Butkus spent nine seasons in the NFL and was a Pro Bowler in eight of them. Butkus was known as an exceptional tackler and is regarded as one of the most intimidating players to ever play the linebacker position. Butkus twice won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1969 and 1970 as he was maybe the best player in the NFL during that time. Following his career, Butkus’ No. 51 jersey was retired, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
